The knowledge I received from the start of my college experience as a working professional to the completion of my master’s program taught me to trust the process of unlearning what I had been taught and relearning what makes sense for my own life. I realized that my mistakes and experiences could serve as a cautionary tale and a thought-provoking story as a mentor inside and outside of academia. If I knew then what I know now, I would have asked my high school guidance counselor more questions and I would have reached out to the schools that accepted me instead of assuming I could not pay for college. I did not know that reaching out to the college’s financial aid department is encouraged. I was hoping for a full scholarship so that I did not need to worry about the details, but a partial or a predetermined amount of merit scholarships covered only so much. I also could have advocated for more money based on my academic standing, but I did not know it at the time. My high school guidance counselor did not know and neither did my mother or her friends. So, my educational pursuits stalled for several years.
